Big Sea Books is an independent publishing house established in 2024. Our sole mission is to publish well-written books and get those books into the hands of readers who want them.
WHAT WE DO
We publish books, of course! And to that end, we aren’t too particular about what kind of book it is.
Big Sea Books is interested in books for children, adults, our teenyboppers, and young teens alike. We’re interested in poetry, fiction, nonfiction, memoirs, genre fiction–so long as a book has a unique concept and is well-written, we’re interested in giving it our consideration for publication.
To repurpose a quote from Don Simpson,
“The pursuit of releasing good and memorable books is the primary reason Big Sea Books makes books. We will try to make history, we will try to publish the books that people want to read. Our obligation and intent is not to make money or headlines–it is to contribute to the art of the physical book and celebrate the power of the written word.”
HOW WE DO IT
Consequently, for authors interested in Big Sea Books, here are a few things you should consider:
In lieu of an advance, Big Sea Books will offer all authors a 50/50 split on royalties. This means if your book is listed for $15.00 and one copy sells, your profit as the author is $7.50, no exceptions.
No one should be priced out of reading. Big Sea Books is committed to making sure that our books are financially accessible (i.e. affordable) for our readers. No book for children, tweens, or young adults will be priced over $15. No general audience or adult books will be over $25.
Approximately four million books are published each year (including self-published titles) and of those, only a handful will be able to emerge as runaway hits. The reality of publishing is that most books are selling three thousand copies or less during their lifetime. Big Sea Books cannot ethically make any promises that we can make any book a bestseller.
Marketability is not a factor we consider when acquiring manuscripts. Just because your manuscript doesn’t fit into conventional genres, is perhaps a shorter length (such as a novella), or isn’t catering to modern trends in pop culture doesn’t mean that it isn’t worth publishing. We will give every manuscript a chance. You can learn more about our submission process here.
We care about the environment and one way to show our commitment to that is to make sure that a book is only printed when a reader buys it. An industry secret is that publishers keep a spreadsheet of stocked inventory and most publishers have so much stock and such little demand that it would take them until 2045 to sell through their print runs. Big Sea Books appreciates the trees and as such, will be utilizing a POD (print-on-demand) model.
There is no place at Big Sea Books for any type of hatred or bigotry. We will not publish or even consider publishing the work of racists, Zionists, homophobes, misogynists, etc.
Big Sea Books will amplify the voices of the marginalized and underrepresented whenever possible.
We may be a new publishing house, but that does not mean we are inexperienced. The minds behind Big Sea Books love books and knows how to get books into the hands of eager readers. Learn more about our Founder’s contributions to the book publishing world here.
